This book is an unique view into a unique adventure, as two educated and wealthy people attempt to make new lives for themselves in the rural and mountainous jungles of Brazil.

Significant lifestyle changes are faced by the couple, compared to their previous lives (as an ever-moving diplomat and concert pianist), but they manage to find joys in the numerous challenges faced in their self-imposed exile from civilization. Uprooting oneself so completely is well outside the norm and, for that reason alone, I would say I quite enjoyed the book despite my issues with it.

The author is rather talented at expressing herself and developing characters but there is a significant underlying tone of western superiority throughout.

That being said, as I read I tried to imagine how the author could have played down this superiority complex and, grammatically or literarily, I don’t know how she could have done much better; t
